Bariatric Surgery is one option to help treat a person who has been clinically diagnosed with Class 3 Obesity (a Body Mass Index, or BMI, measuring 30 or higher). A Bariatric Surgery patient can undergo either a Lap-Band procedure (a gastric band is placed around the patient's stomach to limit the amount of food that can be digested) or a Roux-en-Y (better known as Gastric Bypass, in which the physical size of the stomach is decreased).
Obesity can be a serious health risk. Bariatric Surgery is one step in a lifelong commitment to weight loss. All Bariatric Surgery candidates must be evaluated and monitored in a comprehensive bariatric program before being considered for the surgical procedure. After the surgery, the patient must continue to be monitored by a registered dietitian, as well as maintain an exercise program, a behavior modification program and attend regular support group meetings.
