Optometry

What is Optometry?

An Optometrist is a Doctor of Optometry (O.D.). Optometrists diagnose visual problems, fit and troubleshoot contact lenses and treat a variety of eye diseases.

Ophthalmology vs. Optometry
Do you know the difference?

Optometrists provide the following eye care services:

  • examinations for farsightedness, nearsightedness, astigmatism and bifocals or reading glasses
  • write prescriptions for eyeglasses and contact lenses
  • examinations for eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts and retinal disease related to diabetes and hypertension

Ophthalmologists are Medical Doctors (M.D.) that provide more extensive medical care including surgery when needed. They typically manage more severe eye diseases than their Optometry colleagues. The two specialties typically work closely together.

Optometrists and Ophthalmologists work together to provide comprehensive eye care ranging from eyeglasses and contacts to complex surgery of the eye.
