Ophthalmology

What is Ophthalmology?

An Ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (M.D.) and surgeon who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of eye disease or injury. Ophthalmologists are comprehensive physicians treating all types of eye disease.

Ophthalmology vs. Optometry
Do you know the difference?

Ophthalmologists provide the following eye care services:

  • examinations for glasses but typically not contact lenses
  • examinations for eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts and retinal disease related to diabetes and hypertension
  • offer a complete range of medical and surgical treatment options for all known eye-related disease
  • offer a complete range of diagnostic procedures for any eye related disorder

Optometrists and Ophthalmologists work together to provide comprehensive eye care ranging from eyeglasses and contacts to complex surgery of the eye.
