Internal Medicine

What is Internal Medicine?

Doctors of Internal Medicine, often called "Internists," focus on adult medicine. They care for their patients from the teen years through old age. At least three of their seven or more years of medical school and postgraduate training are dedicated to learning how to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases that affect adults.

Why choose an Internist?

An Internist is a primary care doctor who has wide-ranging knowledge of complex diseases that affect adults. With in-depth training in adult medicine, an Internist can help you navigate the increasingly complex and ever-changing world of medical care.

An Internist will conduct your regular check-ups, suggest normal preventive tests or screenings and will also treat you for any urgent or routine healthcare concern, such as the flu and sprains. He or she is also able to provide in-depth care for a variety of diseases, including chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension.

Internists' patients like knowing that their physician is equipped to deal with whatever problem the patient may have -- no matter how common or rare, or how simple or complex.
